2004
GII assists in WaterAID projects in Eritrea
In 2004, the GII commenced participation in a series of globally funded WaterAID projects in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somaliland. Local geologists and technicians were taught to use geoelectrical methods to map the sub-surface aquifers.

2000
First 3D survey
In late 2000, the GII plans and executes its first 3D seismic acquisition survey in the Shikma basin in Israel. Since then, the company has performed surveys in countries such as Angola and India.

Jordan Deep Crust
In 2000, the GII conducted deep crustal research, running seismic lines between Israel and Jordan.

Relocating to Lod
In January 2000, the GII relocates to its own new building in Lod.

1997
First International Seismic Survey
After dozens of surveys in Israel, Egypt and Jordan, in 1997 the GII executes its first full-blown seismic project in Georgia, kicking off decades of seismic acquisition all around Europe, Africa and Asia.

Back to the Original Name

1991
Crossing the Suez Canal
On return from airbone battles of Mansura on 11 October 1973, four Israeli Phantom aircraft were met by Egyptian Mig 21 fighters. In the battle, two Israeli and two Egyptian planes were shot down. In 1991, the GII helps the authorities search for the remains of the airplanes in the Suez canal and Nile delta river fan sands.

Offshore exploration begins
Offshore exploration in the Mediterranean Sea begins in Israel's economic zone.

1987
New Vibroseis for Countrywide Data Mapping
New Mertz vibroseis vehicles were brought to GII for a nationwide seismic data acquisition project funded by the government of Israel.

First airborne gravity survey in Israel
The first airborne gravity survey is conducted by the GII in Judea and Samaria.

1982
Seismological Unit
In the early 1980's the National Seismological Unit was constructed. Analog recording drums received data from the nation-wide earthquake recording stations.

Recording Mobile Command
The GII installs the recording system on a mobile command unit, able to control vast seismic surveys.

The GII's interpretation room supported dozens of exploration projects.

First aeromagnetic survey in Israel
The first airbone aeromagnetic surveys in Israel are carried out by the GII for the government and private exploration companies.

Analog Film Playback Apparatus
A state of the art analog film system is used to process and manipulate the seismic films

Interpretation of Seismic profiles set on film
Seismic profiles were printed on transparent film and interpreted on light tables.

Processing Power
The Institute set up one of the first IBM 360 Mainframe computers, housed in Holon from 1967 to 1977.

24 Channel Analog System
After a decade of 12 channel recording, the 24 channel analog systems are integrated in the GII.

Proliferation of Projects
The GII executes numerous projects in Colombia, Iran, Sinai Egypt and Jordan

First Seismic Vibrator
The GII's Dynoseis was the first Seismic Vibrator in the region. It was utilized for dozens of projects in and around Israel.

Name Change
In 1964, the Geophysical Institute of Israel changes it's name to The Institute for Petroleum Research and Geophysics

1960's fleet
In the early 1960's, the GII's vehicle fleet was vast and included recording trucks, Dynoseis Seismic Vibrators, drilling rigs and of-course a few beetles...

Analog Recording System
This vintage 12 channel analog recording system was considered leading edge back then. Today, we use recording systems capable of recording 100,000 channels.

GII's first seismic crew
The GII's first seismic crew worked with explosive seismic sources inserted in shallow boreholes.

First offices in Holon
The GII's first offices were at Ha'Mashbir st. 1 in the city of Holon.

1957
GII is Incorprated
In order to provide service to the government and private exploration companies, the Geophysical Institute of Israel was founded out of a department of the Weizman Research Institute.

1955
Oil is found in the Heletz field onshore Israel
In 1955 oil was found onshore Israel in the Heletz field. The government, led by Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, decide that the state needs an official body to manage Oil and Gas exploration and production.

What We Do
The GII is a 'one-stop-shop' for geophysical services in onshore and transition zone exploration and detection underground.
We harness the investigative power of geophysics, out in the field and on the computer. This means using seismic waves, magnetic and gravity potential fields, and the wide range of Electro-Magnetic frequency applications to collect information about the structure, composition, fluid content and anomalies in the sub-surface. The GII has been developing new applied geophysical theory and tools for sub-surface exploration since 1957. With a world leading group of scientists and engineers, working together on multiple projects, the group provides leading edge capabilities to the operational business of GII.

Geothermal
Renewable energies are gaining popularity and the technology to efficiently utilize them are now widespread and accessible. Angola
In 2005, ROC Oil Company Ltd., One of Australia's leading independent upstream oil and gas companies ordered a series of 2D and 3D seismic surveys which marked the effective return of onshore oil exploration activity in Angola after a hiatus of more than 30 years.
From 2005 to 2007, the GII acquired and processed a total of 722 km 2D and 618 km2 3D seismic data, in three separate surveys.
Earthquakes & Seismology
The Geophysical Institute of Israel (GII), has been assigned by the Earth Sciences Research Administration of the Ministry for National Infrastructures of Israel, to perform studies and surveys to reduce earthquake risk in the State of Israel. In that capacity, the Seismology Division provides services and initiates R&D projects in many fields of seismology for better understanding the earthquake phenomena in our region and their possible consequences.
Our Seismological services include:
- Site effect surveying - how seismic amplification will effect specific local sites
- Consultancy on national construction regulations with respect to seismological hazards
- Construction of National Seismological Networks

Shallow Sub-Surface
As human endeavor, curiosity and engineering advances in the sub-surface, the need for quality insight into the shallow ground is greater than ever before. The Geophysical Institute of Israel applies state of the art technology to help its clients and partners get the most out of onshore non-invasive sub-surface geophysics. Underground engineering projects such as mining, construction, transportation, underground military uses, hydrological facilities and other utilities all require knowledge of the rock structure and physical properties such as electrical conductivity. In addition as geophysical technology has increased its effective resolution and accuracy, the the use of geophysics in agriculture and archaeology has been able to provide farmers, agronomists, archaeologists with new actionable insights.
